Ten Second Review
Fiat 500L Lease Review - This is a Fiat 500 on steroids, a bigger and more powerful version designed to actually fit a family and be practical to live with while still holding onto that fun 500 feel. And to a certain extent this achieves all its goals, but with its chunky exterior this will never be a true Fiat 500. What it does keep is the 500’s style, with a great front end that is let down only by the size of the rest of it, and is just as stylish as its Clubman competitor with a certain customisation that comes with this range.
There are a variety of engines to choose from, with a 1.4 litre petrol fighting against the 1.6 and 1.3 litre diesels, both of which are eminently superior and will be much more economical while carrying more torque and just feeling more powerful. There is also the 0.9 litre Twinair model, a patented Fiat system consisting of two cylinders and twin turbo that bring the power but doesn’t give particularly overwhelming performance in this range, but are low on tax and emissions.
All of these work well with the larger body, and the ride is very comfortable and contends with plenty of other MPVs out there. Unfortunately you can tell some of Fiats inexperience here, there is a lot of noise a high speeds and the engines will judder, while the light steering is a little aggressive and quick to centre itself. Inside you begin to see a real change in the range, with masses of legroom and the ability to fit three in the back, although for well-built adults this is going to be a squeeze.
Up front this comes into its own, the high driving position of the hatchback suddenly works in this model and the dash is just as well laid out, with the new infotainment screen positioned perfectly for maximum utility. The rest of the kit is great, with air-con, cruise control and Bluetooth coming as standard, while the top lounge spec gets automatic everything and a panoramic roof that really opens up the space.
Fiat have gone crazy with the options, and you can even put in an espresso machine if you need to! Moving right to the back we have a very large and very square boot that is eminently practical, and has all sorts of extra cubby holes that make it perfect for family life. In short Fiat have gone for practicality and hit a home run, this is a wonderful model to live with, but is just isn’t as fun to drive as its hatchback counterpart.
The 500L is a way of Fiat showing customers that they've taken on feedback and putting their suggestions to market. This fills a gap in the market for a small MPV that is made by a manufacturer well versed in making durable and quality small vehicles. Who better to do that than Fiat? Now families can transport around kids, luggage, go on trips and have fun with a bit of suave Italian style to their journeys. This is set to create a new cool wave of cars in the traditional multi-purpose family vehicle.
