Our favourite cars for summer 2022

Written by Kevin Blackmore

Summer means different things to different people. For some, it’s about loading up the car with family for a much-needed getaway, while for others it’s a cruise with the windows all the way down and the tunes all the way up.

Whatever your plans, the car you enjoy the warm weather in can make or break the experience. A spacious SUV can turn transporting the family and their many belongings from a squeeze to a breeze. An electric car can make a warm afternoon cruise a quiet and relaxing experience, while a convertible will ensure you and your passengers capture every one of those warm summer rays.

We’ve compiled a list of our favourite cars to help you savour the summer sun.

Tesla Model Y

If you’re taking the family away for some sun, there’s no better way to do it than in the Model Y. This compact-to-mid-sized SUV is basically a Crossover version of the Model 3 – the world’s bestselling electric car. With space for up to 2,100 litres of cargo, It has plenty of space for the kids plus their baggage, and with zero harmful emissions, it’s as family-oriented as a car can get. But the icing on the cake is its performance: The standard Long Range version will hit 0-60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, boasts a top speed of 135 mph and delivers a very impressive 331 miles of range.

Fiat 500 convertible

Nothing beats a balmy evening in the city. Maybe a nice meal and catching up with a few friends. If you’re looking to navigate the urban jungle this summer, then this ultra-trendy city car oozes Italian flair and is just the ticket for sneaking into those hard-to-find and even parking spots. The Fiat 500 convertible features a folding fabric ‘sunroof’ for a pleasantly al-fresco driving experience. This dinky cabrio is literally the coolest way to sit at the traffic lights. CUPRA Formentor

Think about summer, and Spain won’t far from the thoughts of many. Spun out of Spanish carmaker SEAT’s performance division, CUPRA products are what the carmaker calls ‘a contemporary vision of sportiness’ and this is best embodied in the Formentor. It’s a stunning Coupe SUV offering a sleek combination of performance, practicality and style with bold sculpting and copper accents that positively ooze street presence. When it comes to summer driving, opt for this SUV and you’ll look cool, while the Formentor does all the sizzling.

Mazda MX-5 Roadster

Including the MX-5 in a list of summer cars is almost a cliché. But there’s no getting away from the fact that this Japanese icon has rewritten the rule book again and again when it comes to sports car sales. With its classic combination of light weight, driver focus and simple front engine/rear drive layout it’s hard to beat. A soft-top by design, the Roadster is perfect for a summer sprint along the coast. Its agile and tactile drive will put a smile on any self-respecting driver’s face. The best way to get a car tan? We think so.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz

Launching this July and just in time for summer, the ID.Buzz is the all-electric equivalent of the surfer’s favourite – the VW Type 2 Microbus. According to Volkswagen, the ID. Buzz is designed to be modern, fresh and exciting for those who may not have even been around during the 1960s and 70s while retaining cues to the original. True to its heritage, the Buzz comes with an option for two-tone paint. If you’re planning a beach trip to catch some radical surf, then the ID. Buzz is totally for you.
